Hunger intensifies in Gaza
According to
a warning from the UN World Food Programme, nearly a third of Gaza's population
is hungry.
"Malnutrition
is becoming increasingly severe," the agency said in a statement. 90,000
women and children are in need of immediate medical assistance.
This week, a
famine warning has been issued in Gaza. Nine people died of malnutrition on
Friday, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, bringing the total number
of deaths to 122.
Israel, which is in charge of all supplies entering Gaza, has declared that aid is unlimited. It has blamed Hamas for the malnutrition.
Aid
agencies had previously warned that airlifts were insufficient, but an Israeli
security official said on Friday that permission could be granted in the coming
days.
